33 people were killed and 3514 others were injured, including 125 seriously, in 2548 traffic accidents recorded within urban areas during the week from May 18 to 24.
A statement from the General Directorate of National Security attributed the main causes of these accidents, in order, to drivers' inattention, failure to respect right of way, pedestrians' inattention, excessive speed, failure to maintain a safe distance, lack of control, failure to respect the "stop" sign, changing direction without signaling, faulty overtaking, driving in the wrong direction, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving on the left side of the road, failure to respect the stop imposed by the red light, and changing direction without permission.
Regarding monitoring and deterrence operations in the field of traffic, the same source clarified that the security services were able to record 52,649 violations, complete 7640 reports referred to the Public Prosecution, and collect 45,009 settlement fines.
The statement indicated that the amount collected reached 9,913,450 dirhams, while the number of vehicles placed in the municipal impound lot was 5215 vehicles, the number of documents withdrawn was 7640 documents, and the number of vehicles that were stopped was 682 vehicles.
