The automotive sector has regained its position as the leading exporting sector in 2023, after losing it to the phosphates and derivatives sector in 2022, according to the Office des Changes.
Exports from the automotive sector showed an increase of 28.4% compared to the previous year, due to the increase in exports from the construction ecosystem (+22.6%) and the wiring ecosystem (+34.4%), the Office specifies in its annual report on Morocco’s foreign trade.
Regarding exports in the electronics sector, they recorded an increase of 21%, mainly linked to the increase in sales of electronic components (+26%).
Exports from the textile sector also increased by 5% to 46.1 billion dirhams in 2023, mainly driven by the increase in exports of ready-made clothing (+7%) and hosiery items (+5.5%). Similarly, exports from the aeronautics sector showed an improvement of 3.8%, explained by an increase in exports from the EWIS ecosystem (Electrical Wiring Interconnection System) combined with the decline in assembly exports. On the other hand, the phosphates and derivatives sector, whose exports increased by 43.9% in 2022, recorded a drop in its sales in 2023 of 33.6%. This decline concerns all products. As for exports from the “Agriculture and agri-food” sector, they remained almost stable at 83.2 billion dirhams.
In addition, Moroccan exports are dominated by seven products that contribute 55.8% of total exports. Passenger cars top the ranking of exported products in 2023, with a share of 15.1%, ahead of natural and chemical fertilizers (13%), wires, cables and other insulated conductors for electricity (11.2%), ready-made clothing (6.9%), parts and pieces for cars and passenger vehicles (3.6%), phosphoric acid (3%) and parts of aircraft and other air or space vehicles (3%).
