HIBAPRESS – Mohamed Zerouih
In a significant step to strengthen water infrastructure to face the challenges of climate change and supply shortages, the province of Nador is preparing to host one of the largest strategic projects, represented by a seawater desalination plant in the municipality of Berkane. This project is highly anticipated to secure future needs for drinking water and irrigation.
The same sources revealed that the administrative and technical process of the project is progressing steadily. It has been decided to announce the tender requests for the construction of this vital facility immediately after the formation of the next government, specifically during October, to open the door for specialized companies to compete in implementing this royal project.
According to the specified timeline, the initial groundwork for the field operations will officially commence in January 2027, with the pace of work continuing diligently until the summer of 2029, which is the expected timeframe for the completion of the work and the plant's entry into the actual production phase.
On a technical level, the utmost importance of this project lies in its massive production capacity, which will reach approximately 250 million cubic meters annually. This enormous volume will directly contribute to alleviating pressure on groundwater aquifers and ensuring stable supplies for the region.
This development project confirms the commitment of the concerned authorities to accelerate the implementation of major projects related to water security, which will give the province of Nador and surrounding areas a strong economic boost and ensure the sustainability of vital resources for future generations.
