The awareness campaign “B7ar Bla Plastic 2024” (Sea without plastic), organized by the Mohammed VI Foundation for the Protection of the Environment (FM6E), stopped on Saturday at Foum El Oued beach in Laayoune.
Initiated in partnership with the Foum El Oued commune and local NGOs, this operation is intended for children registered in summer camps organized by the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication.
“B7ar Bla Plastic”, which is in its 5th edition this year, aims to raise awareness among children about the dangers of plastic pollution and the importance of preserving marine biodiversity.
The children were thus entitled to awareness-raising workshops focusing on the dangers of plastic and waste linked to sea fishing, waste sorting, the preservation of marine biodiversity and the recycling of plastic waste.
They were also introduced to diving and underwater fishing techniques and made aware of the impact of microplastics on living beings and the marine ecosystem as well as the negative consequences of illegal fishing, in addition to drawing workshops.
According to the representative of the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection, Hala Menkari, this initiative, which aims to raise awareness of the risks of coastal pollution and environmental education, is part of the 25th season of “Clean Beaches”, the Foundation’s flagship program which this year targets 109 beaches, including 27 labeled “Blue Flag”, in addition to four marinas and, for the first time, a natural park.
The Foundation has been strongly mobilized to fight against the scourge of coastal pollution, said Ms. Menkari, adding that the “B7ar Bla Plastic” operation will continue in order to achieve the four objectives set.
The aim, she explained, is to raise awareness among two million young people about the dangers of plastic pollution, to carry out no fewer than 40,000 environmental awareness activities, to reduce plastic waste by eliminating at least 10 tonnes per beach, and to recycle all the plastic waste collected.
For his part, the director of the Foum El Oued holiday camp, Boussola Taleb Bouya, indicated that this environmental campaign seeks to promote awareness among children in the holiday camps about the importance of preserving the cleanliness of the beach, through a range of activities and awareness workshops.
This initiative is of great importance since it is aimed at all holidaymakers, especially since Foum El Oued beach has hoisted the Blue Flag for the 17th consecutive year, he noted, highlighting the total and constant support of the Regional Directorate of Youth in this operation which aims to establish the culture of combating pollution of beaches and the coastline.
As for the director of Foum El Oued beach, Slimane Habadi, he specified that this environmental operation, which involves the participation of local associations, offers a range of awareness-raising activities including a photographic exhibition on biodiversity, workshops on underwater heritage, the harmful effects of the use of plastic, recycling, damage caused by pollution, the Eco-Schools program of the FM6E, in addition to entertainment activities.
Launched by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection under the chairmanship of Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa, this campaign is part of the 25th season of the “Clean Beaches” program.
