Strengthen and ensure the supply of drinking water to the town of Guercif and its surroundings

The National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water recently launched the operation of a project aimed at strengthening and securing the supply of drinking water to the city of Guercif and its surroundings, from the surface waters of Oued Zabzit.

A press release from the Office explains: “This project, whose total cost is 470 million dirhams, and which is financed by the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water, notably through a loan from the African Development Bank, includes the establishment of a drinking water network, a purification plant with a flow rate of approximately 25,920 cubic meters per day, and the construction of a treated water reservoir with a capacity of 3,500 cubic meters, in addition to the laying of 80 km of canals.

Communication has begun, the report adds, to proactively exploit this important project thanks to the efforts made by the office’s teams, relying on a raw water outlet completed in Oued Zabzit, which will currently allow the production of a flow of up to 13 thousand cubic meters per day of treated water, and thus ensure the supply of drinking water to the city of Guercif and its surroundings while waiting for the completion of the Tarka Oumadi dam.

This major project, which is part of the National Drinking Water and Irrigation Water Supply Program 2020-2027, the agreement of which was signed before His Majesty King Mohammed VI on January 13, 2020, will contribute to filling the deficit recorded in the drinking water supply in this region due to the drop in groundwater levels due to the lack of rainfall that the same region has experienced, after successive years of drought.

The communication concludes that this important project will contribute to meeting the demand for drinking water in the city of Guercif and its surroundings for a population of approximately 258 thousand people by 2040. It will also contribute to improving the living conditions of the beneficiary population, and to the social and economic development of the region.
