HIBAPRESS – Tangier
The coastal fishing crisis at Tangier port is worsening, amid rising fuel prices and increasing costs of sea trips, which has prompted a number of boats to lay off their fishermen indefinitely, with fears of a wider halt to activity.
In this context, the Boğaz Association for Coastal Fishing Captains sent a letter to the Regional Delegate for Maritime Fishing, demanding an emergency meeting and the approval of direct support for gas oil, along with capping its prices, to alleviate the financial burdens weighing on professionals.
The captains threatened to stop sailing for 48 hours, extendable, if their demands are not met, warning of the social and economic repercussions of the crisis on fishermen and families who depend on this sector, as well as activities related to fish marketing.
Professional circles are awaiting the outcomes of the anticipated meeting, amid fears that the crisis will escalate and turn into a mass stoppage that could affect fishing and trade activity at the port of Tangier.
