In line with the policy of Dr Patrice Motsepe, the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), to improve club competitions and provide more financial assistance to clubs, clubs participating in the preliminary stages of the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup will receive USD 50,000 each.

The first preliminary round begins with first leg matches scheduled between August 16 and 18, followed by second leg matches from August 23 to 25, 2024.

The second preliminary round will take place in September, the winners of these confrontations will qualify for the group stage.

This is the first time that CAF has offered financial prize money to clubs at this stage of the competition. Previously, clubs had to reach the group stages to be eligible to share the overall prize money.

Over the past two years, the CAF Executive has significantly increased its investments in African club football:

The winner of the CAF Champions League now pockets $4,000,000 – up from $2,500,000 in 2022. The winner of the CAF Confederation Cup now pockets over $2,000,000 – up from $1,200,000 in 2022. Last year, clubs benefited from the African Football League (AFL)’s financial injection of $8,000,000.

Financial allocation of the CAF Champions League:

Winner – $4,000,000 Runner-up – $2,000,000 Semi-Finalists | $1,200,000 Quarter-Finalists | $900,000 Group 3rd | $700,000 Group 4th | $700,000

Financial allocation of the CAF Confederation Cup:

Winner | $2,000,000 Runner-up | $1,000,000 Semi-Finalists | $750,000 Quarter-Finalists | $550,000 Group 3rd | $400,000 Group 4th | $400,000

This important measure by CAF addresses long-standing concerns of clubs regarding travel expenses and logistical costs associated with their participation in interclub competitions.

This financial boost for the preliminary round participants complements the existing structure of financial allocations for the later phases of the two competitions.

This move is expected to encourage more clubs to participate in continental competitions and raise the general standard of club football in Africa.
