Hurricane Ernesto is slowly approaching Canada, but is expected to leave relatively limited traces of its passage. However, a rain warning has been issued for part of Newfoundland.
The storm is expected to pass well southeast of the Maritimes on Monday, the Canadian Hurricane Centre maintained in its Sunday afternoon bulletin.
Ernesto was a Category 1 hurricane when it made landfall in Bermuda early Saturday. It was downgraded to a tropical storm before regaining strength Sunday and becoming a hurricane again.
As of 5 p.m. Sunday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center reported the hurricane was moving north-northeast at about 17 mph (28 km/h), with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 km/h).
Ernesto is due to be a post-tropical storm as it passes south of Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula on Monday.
Rain warnings
Environment Canada issued rainfall warnings for the Southeast Avalon Peninsula and the Southwest Avalon Peninsula on Sunday afternoon.
From Monday evening and during the following night, these regions will receive around thirty millimeters of rain, and up to 60 millimeters where it will be heaviest.
On Monday evening, gusts will reach 60 to 80 km/h in the south of the peninsula.
