Morocco ranked first in Africa at the 2024 Mathematical Olympiad

Morocco won first place at the 31st African Mathematics Olympiad, hosted by the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, from August 10 to 20.
A press release from the Ministry of National Education, Primary Education and Sports states that “the national team was able to obtain 201 points, following the deliberations of the organizing scientific committee, because the total number of points obtained is considered a record that no country has ever obtained in the history of the Olympic Games”, followed by the Algerian team in second position (186 points), while the Tunisian team ranked third (133 points).
In terms of medals, the Moroccan competitors won three gold medals and three silver medals distributed among the team members. The gold medals were won by student Yacine Kamouh (42/42 points – maximum score) from the Casablanca-Settat region, and student Adam Mahdan (35/42 points) from Souss-Massa, and student Sami Moussaoui (33/42 points) from the East.
The silver medals were won by student Sarah Al-Masnawi (31/42 points) from the Casablanca-Settat region, and student Sakina Al-Barransi (30/42 points) from the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region, as well as by student Lina Shaker (30/42 points). Each of the three competitors also won gold medals in the women’s category (PAMO Girls).
The same source indicates that 27 countries participated in these competitions, each country being represented by a team composed of 6 competitors (3 women and 3 men), during which the competitors pass two tests on two consecutive days, each lasting four and a half hours to complete.
