To strengthen cooperation…a memorandum of understanding between Morocco and the Democratic Republic of Congo

On Tuesday in Rabat, a memorandum of understanding was signed between Morocco and the Democratic Republic of Congo aimed at strengthening joint cooperation in the areas of the environment and sustainable development.
This memorandum was signed as part of the official visit to Morocco by the Minister of Environment, Sustainable Development and the Congo Basin, Arlette Soudan Nonault, to assess progress made in activating the Congo Basin Climate Commission and the Blue Commission. Congo Basin Fund, and preparing for future benefits such as organizing a donor roundtable and the fourth summit of heads of state and government, in addition to participating in the 29th Conference of the Parties on Climate.
This memorandum, signed by the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, and Ms. Soudan Nonault, who is also the Executive Secretary of the Congo Basin Climate Commission, aims to strengthen cooperation in the areas of environmental governance, environmental and strategic assessment and the fight against climate change, in particular nationally determined contributions.
The scope of this partnership also includes resource management, biodiversity, green and blue economy, liquid disinfection and integrated waste management.
In a statement to the press, Mrs. Benali indicated that this meeting constitutes an important step to activate the exchange of experiences and strategies between the two countries in the fields of environment and sustainable development, particularly in the field of climate finance to bring more funds to the African continent, particularly the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Kingdom of Morocco.
Ms. Benali stressed that the meeting is also an opportunity to work on projects related to waste recycling, green economy and blue economy, stressing that these are important projects to achieve sustainable development of the two countries.
The Minister noted that partnerships between African countries allow the development of projects aimed at strengthening the energy transition of African countries and strengthening their development path.
For her part, the Congolese minister confirmed that this memorandum of cooperation will further strengthen cooperation with Morocco in the areas of the environment and sustainable development, noting that it includes a number of areas of common interest, such as the fight against climate change, biodiversity and the fight against the green and blue economy.
The Congolese minister said: “This agreement embodies the effective activation of the work of the Congo Basin Climate Committee and represents a qualitative step in our joint work to prepare for the COP29 Conference of the Parties.”
The Congo Basin Climate Committee is one of three African climate committees that were created during the first African Action Summit, held at the initiative of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, on the sidelines of the 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties in Marrakech.
Morocco is considered a founding member of the Congo Basin Climate Commission, in accordance with the protocol establishing this committee, signed by the heads of member states at the first acceleration summit of the Climate Commission and the Blue Fund for the Congo Basin in Brazzaville in April 2018, where Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Hasnaa was appointed President of the Mohammed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection, goodwill ambassador of this committee and the Blue Fund.
