Burning of more than 10 tons of Shera drugs in Essaouira

On Wednesday, Essaouira customs officers set fire to more than 10 tons of Shera drugs, recently seized by elements of the Royal Gendarmerie near the rural commune of Ounagha, 25 km from the town of Vents.

This large quantity of medicines was destroyed under the supervision of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, in the presence of customs officers, representatives of local authorities, the Royal Gendarmerie and the health and civil protection sector.

In a statement to the Maghreb Arab News Agency, Abdel Basset Al-Imami, head of the Customs and Indirect Taxes Directorate in Essaouira, confirmed that the seizure of this large quantity of drugs, whose total value is estimated at 100 million dirhams, reflects the tireless efforts deployed to combat drug trafficking at the regional level.

In this regard, he explained that the cargo was discovered hidden in 245 bags inside a truck trailer following an accident near Onagha.

Mr. Al-Imami praised the exemplary cooperation between the various departments concerned, stressing the importance of constant vigilance and coordination of efforts to combat drug trafficking.

He also stressed that a judicial investigation has been opened to determine the circumstances of this case, identify the actors involved and dismantle possible smuggling networks linked to this operation.
