Migration attempts to Melilla decline following criticism of Civil Guard management
Heba Press: Abdel Salam Belgarbi, Mohamed Zariouh
The occupied city of Melilla experienced 736 attempts at illegal immigration by sea during the month of August, a significant decrease compared to the same period last year, which recorded 1,023 attempts at entry. The central government delegate in Melilla reported that around 300 people attempted to enter the city in just one week.
In her statement, Sabrina Moh, the government representative, defended the violent intervention of the Spanish Civil Guard against a boat carrying migrants near the coast of Nador, where the Spanish Navy rammed the boat despite the seriousness of the situation. She thanked the members of the Civil Guard for their efforts to protect the occupied city from illegal immigration, stressing that this task is difficult and linked to the protection of borders.
It should be noted that most of the attempts at illegal migration foiled in the waters of the Nador region are made possible by the interventions of the Royal Moroccan Navy and security authorities, while the interventions of the Spanish side remain limited and suffer from an inability to perfectly manage the phenomenon.
