Bill in Parliament to impose financial fines to combat food waste
The Moroccan parliament begins discussing a bill that would punish anyone who wastes food and reduce their economic losses.
This legislative initiative proposes that a fine equivalent to twice the market value of the wasted food be imposed on entities that intentionally waste it or fail to take the necessary measures to conserve it.
The project, presented by the National Liberal Rally team that leads the government, aims to make all stakeholders in the field of nutrition responsible for the fight against the waste of edible food, by promoting unsold edible food and not throwing it away.
Reports indicate that Morocco sold more than 4.2 million tons of food products in 2022, an increase of one million tons compared to the previous year. This phenomenon is not limited to the economic impact, but also constitutes a challenge to achieve food security in the country.
