The Mauritanian National Assembly (Parliament) granted its confidence to the government of Mokhtar Ould Diay on Saturday evening, with a large majority.

Thus, 140 out of 176 deputies voted in favour of the government’s general policy programme presented last Wednesday by Mr Ould Diay.

The Prime Minister promised in this regard that his government “will spare no effort to honour its commitments and will try to accelerate the completion of ongoing projects, as well as those recently programmed.”

Among the main measures and projects of the new government’s program is the launch of a “responsible, frank and inclusive” dialogue, in order to calmly rethink the governance system and the democratic model.

The programme also provides for the launch of a series of rapid intervention programmes covering several sectors, including the priority programme for the stabilisation, reduction and support of basic food prices, by setting a ceiling price which takes into account reasonable profit margins.

President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani appointed Mokhtar Ould Diay on August 3 to head the first government of his second term, following his re-election as president of the country in the presidential elections held on June 29.
