The British Virgin Islands, like Anguilla, had a historic day this Tuesday, March 26, 2024. The two selections indeed managed to advance through the first round of qualifying for the Concacaf zone for the FIFA World Cup™ for the very first times.
The two duels of this first qualifying round had the particularity of ending with a penalty shootout. After 120 minutes in Road Town, the British Virgin Islands and their American counterparts were still neck and neck with neither having managed to find the net. Azarni Callwood, a 17-year-old player, was ultimately the hero of the British Virgin Islands' success over their neighbor.
On the Providenciales side, however, the score was 1-1 at the end of regulation time and overtime between Turks and Caicos and Anguilla. It was Kian Duncan who scored the winning spot kick as Anguilla ended 24 years of frustration and reached the second round for the first time in their history.
