The Constitutional Council of Senegal has just confirmed the election of Bassirou Diomaye Faye as president of Senegal with 54.28% of the votes, according to the final official results of Sunday's presidential election.

Declared winner in the first round of voting, Bassirou Diomaye Faye (44) thus becomes the fifth and youngest president of Senegal since the country's independence in 1960.

The native of Ndiaganiao in the department of Mbour (West) succeeds outgoing President Macky Sall in power for 12 years.

Graduated in 2007 from the National School of Administration (ENA), Mr. Faye took his first steps in politics with the creation in 2014 of the party “African Patriots of Senegal for work, ethics and fraternity (Pastef) . The former tax inspector quickly established himself as a central figure in the party led by Ousmane Sonko by becoming its secretary general.

Alongside politics, the new elected president was notably secretary general of the Domaines union and played a key role in union demands within the tax union.

In April 2023, Bassirou Diomaye Faye was arrested for having criticized the magistrates who decided to judge opponent Ousmane Sonko on appeal in the defamation trial brought by the Minister of Tourism. Despite his incarceration, Pastef designated him in November 2023 as its candidate for the presidential election.

On January 20, 2024, the Constitutional Council published the final list of presidential candidates and the candidacy of Diomaye Faye was validated because, although imprisoned, he was never tried. He was also released on March 14, benefiting from a general amnesty law passed a week earlier.

Bassirou Diomaye Faye presented himself in the presidential election as a “candidate of change”, promising voters “a reappropriation of sovereignty”.

In his program entitled “the project of a sovereign, just and prosperous Senegal”, he also promises to renegotiate mining and hydrocarbon contracts and to reassess fishing agreements, particularly with foreign actors. He also plans to renegotiate defense agreements and reform the country's institutions.

Father of four children, Bassirou Diomaye Faye will be sworn in on Tuesday in Diamniadio (30 km from Dakar). The transfer of power with Macky Sall is planned for the same day at the Presidential Palace in Dakar.
