The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita, stressed, Monday in New York, the constant support of King Mohammed VI, Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, for the Palestinian cause and people.
Speaking at a ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, Mr. Bourita indicated that Morocco places the Palestinian issue on the same level as its first national cause and makes it a constant of its foreign policy, noting that the Kingdom supports the Palestinian Authority in all its efforts to preserve the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
The Minister noted that the King, Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), has set four pressing priorities to end the cycles of violence, with the first being the urgency of de-escalating tensions with a view to a permanent and controllable ceasefire and the protection of civilians in accordance with international law and international humanitarian law.
It is equally essential, the minister added, to ensure the smooth delivery of humanitarian aid in sufficient quantities to the population of Gaza and to promote a political perspective on the Palestinian question capable of reviving the two-state solution.
The minister also stressed the need to preserve the character of the city of Al-Quds and its legal, cultural, historical and demographic status, as a spiritual center of coexistence and understanding between the followers of the three monotheistic religions.
Referring also to South-South cooperation, Mr. Bourita indicated that in line with the Royal vision, Morocco is establishing partnership with other African countries at the heart of its priorities, through effective partnerships in strategic development sectors such as food security, health and training.
In this context, he recalled the speech of King Mohammed VI on the occasion of the 13th NAM summit in which the Sovereign stressed that Morocco “aims to raise the issue of South-South cooperation to a priority level, it being understood that it is in the interest of our countries to promote cooperation and partnership by relying more on their own means to face together the challenges of globalization.”
Aware of the difficulties faced by the countries of the Sahel and the Sahara, the King launched, on the occasion of the 48th anniversary of the glorious Green March, an international initiative aimed at allowing the countries of this region to have access to the Atlantic, added Mr. Bourita.
This Royal initiative represents, according to the Minister, the extension of Morocco’s active and supportive membership and the King’s personal commitment alongside the Sahel countries and underlines the primordial importance that the Sovereign grants to the human dimension and sustainable development of this region of the continent.
