The 2024 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded on Friday October 11 to Nihon Hidankyo, an organization of survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki which is rewarded “for its efforts in favor of a world without nuclear weapons”.

In its press release on X (New window), the jury said it wanted to reward this “popular movement of survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki”. The organization receives the Nobel Peace Prize “for its efforts in favor of a world without nuclear weapons and for having demonstrated through testimonies that nuclear weapons must never be used again,” specifies the selection committee.

“One day, the survivors of the atomic bombs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki will no longer be among us as witnesses to History,” underlines the jury in its press release. “But thanks to a strong culture of remembrance and a permanent commitment, the new Japanese generations are perpetuating the experience and the message of the witnesses. They are sources of inspiration and education for people all over the world,” continues the jury.

The Japanese anti-atomic weapons organization succeeds the Iranian Narges Mohammadi, a 51-year-old activist and journalist, rewarded in 2023 for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran.
