In August 2022 we told you that Air Algérie was making giant strides in Africa and that the direct competitor, Royal Air Maroc (RAM), was within reach. In 2022 the continent’s leaders in the number of flights and passengers transported were Ethiopian Airlines, EgyptAir and RAM. Notable change in 2023: Air Algérie ranks 3rd among African airlines, a few steps behind the two leaders, RAM is demoted to 5th position…

After the ranking which places the Algerian company among the top 3 airline fleets in Africa, with a total of 56 aircraft, Air Algérie joins the Top 3 of the largest carriers. Algiers’ efforts are paying off. In March 2022 the national company caused a sensation by announcing no fewer than 64 new flights. Last November 16 new services were announced, including lines to New York.

The new ranking, established by AFRICA Facts Zone, includes another surprise: Ethiopian Airlines is no longer number 1 in Africa, with its 13.89 million passengers transported in 2023 it has been dethroned by the Nigerian company Air Peace, which displays 14 million passengers. Air Algérie transported 7.2 million travelers last year, EgyptAir 6.4 million, Kenya Airways and RAM 5 million, South African Airways 4.6 million, Tunisair 2.474 million.

Overall, African companies are doing like a charm, the latest ranking from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) shows a significant increase in air traffic during the first months of 2024. The report estimates at 20.7% the increase in air traffic compared to the same period last year. A situation which illustrates the continental dynamic, with 11 countries among the 20 which display the highest growth rates in the world.
