An investigation carried out by the Anti-Poison Center of the Ministry of Health (CAPM) in dry cleaners confirmed that the product used in dry cleaning dry cleaners called “perchloroethylene” or simply perchlo, is a product which represents a danger to the population health.

It is a liquid, volatile and colorless solvent belonging to the halogenated hydrocarbon family. If used inappropriately, exposure may cause mucosal and skin irritations, neurological signs (headaches, convulsions, dizziness, disorientation), and digestive signs (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea). Irritation of the respiratory tract is also possible with risk of pulmonary edema.

Handling the product without protective measures may also be responsible for liver, kidney and heart damage. The International Agency for Research on Cancer characterizes this solvent as a probable carcinogen. This carcinogenic effect was confirmed by European Union experts following an in-depth evaluation, based on toxicological and epidemiological studies.
