The Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, indicated on Monday in Rabat that 64% of roads are in “good” or even “excellent” condition.
In response to two oral questions in the House of Representatives on “maintenance of the road network”, Mr. Baraka affirmed that based on the state of the roads at the end of 2022, a road map has been put in place aimed at road maintenance through the modernization of national roads, the maintenance of regional and provincial roads and the adaptation of the road network to the needs of road traffic.
He indicated that, in parallel with this program, a road reclassification operation is underway, noting that several roads classified as national roads do not meet the required criteria, while others do not exceed 4 meters even though they are supposed to measure 7.5 meters.
The reclassification operation guaranteeing maintenance was carried out in the Al Haouz region affected by the earthquake, he added, noting the launch of work to widen national road No. 7 to 7 .5 meters instead of 4 meters.
In the same context, he indicated that, for the first time, a budget dedicated to the maintenance of rural roads which extend over 500 km this year, was integrated into the 2024 budget.
