Mr. Abderrahim HOUMY, Director General of the National Agency for Water and Forests, was elected vice-president of the United Nations Forum on Forests for the 2024-2026 biennium on behalf of the African continent. Mr. Abderrahim HOUMY announced the launch by Morocco of an initiative focused on community forest management, technological innovation and sustainable financing, in support of the efforts of the United Nations Forum on Forests. The National Agency for Water and Forests (ANEF) played an active role during the 19th session of the United Nations Forum on Forests, which took place in New York from May 6 to 10, 2024.

This session focused on political dialogue to support the implementation of the International Arrangement on Forests, addressing priority themes such as the socio-economic and environmental benefits of forests, the mobilization of financial resources, the scientific and technical cooperation, as well as the mid-term evaluation of the International Arrangement on Forests.

A High Level segment in the form of a round table, held at the headquarters of the United Nations, marked this 19th session under the theme “Forest solutions to the triple planetary crises: climate change, loss of biodiversity and pollution, as well as desertification, drought and deforestation.”

This event was held on the eve of the celebration of the 4th edition of the International Day of the Argan Tree, an emblematic ecosystem of Morocco.

During this high-level round table, Mr. Abderrahim HOUMY, Director General of ANEF, pleaded in favor of increased support for sustainable forest management and strengthened collaboration within the framework of regional initiatives. He also announced an initiative proposed by Morocco, with the support of the United Nations Forum on Forests, aimed at mobilizing international experts on the themes of community forest management, the use of new technologies in forest management and mobilization of financing.

Mr. HOUMY underlined Morocco’s continued commitment to sustainable forest management, particularly through the “Forests of Morocco 2020-2030” strategy, launched by HIS MAJESTY KING MOHAMMED VI in 2020.

The session of the United Nations Forum on Forests was an opportunity to highlight the “Forests of Morocco 2020-2030” strategy, highlighting its role in mitigating climate change, adapting to their effects and conservation of biodiversity, as well as in achieving sustainable development goals.

The session concluded with the election of Mr. Abderrahim HOUMY, Director General of ANEF, as vice-president of the United Nations Forum on Forests for the 2024-2026 biennium. This election demonstrates the confidence placed in the Kingdom of Morocco by African countries and within the UN, and confirms the country’s leadership in the areas of the environment and sustainable forest management.

It should be recalled that the United Nations Forum on Forests was established in October 2000 by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) to promote the management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests.
