After sinking yacht in Strait of Gibraltar, Spain warns sailors about orcas

The Spanish Transport Ministry has warned sailors in the area between Gibraltar and northern Tangier about killer orcas, after they caused the sinking of a pleasure boat in the Strait of Gibraltar a few days ago.

The Spanish Transport Ministry has published an interactive map showing areas of orca activity in the region, urging sailors, sailboat and yacht owners to exercise caution, especially between April and August, when the activity of these whales is increased in the region.

He said: “In the event of an attack, do not stop sailing but continue towards the coast. Please move away from the sides of the boat to be safe from a surprise attack which could result in injury or falling into the sea.”
