CAF Cup / Tomorrow, “return” final against RSB in Cairo: Zamalek’s journey


Winner of the 2019 TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup, Zamalek, the cador of Egyptian football, is eager to end a long drought of five years without a continental title.

The Egyptians are preparing to face their North African counterparts, the Moroccans RS Berkane in a return final tomorrow May 19 which will allow one of the two former champions to reconquer their title.

Preliminary round: 4 – 3 over the two matches against AS Arta

The Egyptians of Zamalek had a difficult start in the preliminary round, losing 2-0 against the Djiboutians of AS Arta. As they headed towards an early exit, the Egyptians rallied to achieve a convincing victory (4-1).

Group stage: Leading Group B with 16 points

Zamalek clearly showed its ambitions in the group stage by finishing at the top of Group B in a group made up of Abu Salem (Libya), Sagrada Esperança (Angola) and CO Coyah (Guinea).

Zamalek finished with 16 points from five wins and just one 0-0 draw against Sagrada Esperance away.

Quarter-finals: 3-2 aggregate victory against Modern Future

The competition intensified in the quarter-finals when the former champions had to face their Egyptian Premier League counterparts, Modern Future FC.

They survived the first-leg scare to come back from a goal down to claim an important 2-1 away win thanks to second-half goals from Hamza Mathlouthi and a late converted penalty by Ahmed Sayed.

Semi-finals: 3-0 victory over Dreams FC

Facing an energetic Dreams FC, Zamalek did not have an easy task against a team which, on its debut, made history by reaching the semi-finals of the competition.

The Ghanaians looked set to spring another upset after holding Zamalek to a 0-0 draw in their backyard, before crashing out 3-0 in Kumasi, a result which allowed Zamalek to qualify for the final.
