After the end of the restoration work… opening of the archaeological site of Chellah to visitors.

The Regional Development Company “Rabat Region of Historical Heritage”, responsible for the management and operation of the archaeological site of Chellah, announced the opening of the site to visitors after major restoration work started in 2021.

A press release from the Regional Development Company “Rabat Region of Historical Heritage” indicated that the archaeological site of Chellah, classified as a historic monument since 1920 and listed as a UNESCO world heritage site in 2012, occupies a strategic place in the heart of the capital. , enjoying inestimable historical and archaeological value. He stressed that it is a “true protected cultural treasure, subject to continuous restoration and maintenance”.

The same source explained that to enhance the value of the archaeological site of Chellah and manage it in an innovative way while preserving its historical value, the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication entrusted the management of the site to the Company of Regional Development “Rabat Region of Historical Heritage”. This project has four main objectives: improve the reception conditions for the public by guaranteeing easy and comfortable access for all visitors, increase the attractiveness of the archaeological site by proposing new offers which arouse the interest of visitors and highlight its history and cultural richness, establish a sustainable economic model allowing long-term financing of conservation, restoration and enhancement activities of the site, and create an ecosystem involving stakeholders, including local economic actors, in the management and promotion of the site.

To achieve these ambitious objectives, the Regional Development Company “Rabat Region of Historical Heritage” has taken several measures, including the creation of a new tourist route, the provision of audio guided tours, the creation of a dedicated website to the site, and the conclusion of a partnership with the specialized company “Chellah En Scène” to offer new benefits and services.

The tourist route of the Chellah site offers a real dive into the history of Morocco, starting with a visit to the ancient city where visitors can explore the remains of the Roman and Mauritanian era. Then, they discover the Marinid necropolis, which immerses them in the fascinating atmosphere of the Middle Ages, ending with the gardens of the towers offering a break and a special welcome after discovering the archaeological treasures of the site.

The statement added that 29 landmarks have been set up along the new route, with explanations and interpretations provided via audio guides, allowing visitors to learn more about each site and gain relevant historical and cultural information in their tongue.

A website entitled (www.Chellah.site) has been created to share useful information about the site and its different components. Visitors can explore the fascinating history of Chellah, discover the archaeological excavations carried out at the site, as well as the objects found. The site also allows you to reserve and purchase entry tickets remotely.

Concerning prices and discounts, the press release specifies that prices vary depending on the visit options. The price of a standard entrance ticket starts at 70 Moroccan dirhams, while the audio guide tour costs 120 dirhams per person. Moroccans and foreign residents in Morocco benefit from a 50% reduction on visit rates.

To increase the attractiveness of the site, the Regional Development Company “Rabat Region of Historical Heritage” has entered into a partnership with the specialized company “Chellah En Scène” to offer new products and services that attract the interest of visitors and highlight value the history and cultural richness of the site.

The “Rabat Region of Historical Heritage” Company is a key player in the management of the site registered under the name “Rabat, modern capital and historic city: a shared heritage”.

This company was founded in January 2023 by the State and the Council of the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region, with the main objective of managing, preserving and promoting tangible and intangible cultural heritage.
