United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reiterated on Tuesday his call for an “immediate” ceasefire in Gaza and the “unconditional” release of all hostages.

“The (UN) Secretary-General reiterates his call for an immediate ceasefire, as well as for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages,” said his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, during his briefing daily in New York.

In this context, the UN chief recommended “tangible and irreversible” steps to promote the emergence of a “political horizon” to the conflict in the Middle East.

He also urged “urgent” steps to be taken that will allow the parties to re-engage on the political path to achieve a two-state solution, stressing that the United Nations will continue to support all such efforts.

The senior UN official also called for “complete, rapid, safe and unimpeded” humanitarian access to Gaza.
