FC Barcelona and coach Hansi Flick have reached an agreement for the German to become the coach of the Barça first team until June 30, 2026.

The new FC Barcelona coach signed his contract at the Club Offices, in the presence of President Joan Laporta, Vice-President Responsible for Sport Raya Yuste and Sports Director, Deco.

A coach who won everything

By recruiting Hansi Flick, FC Barcelona has acquired a coach recognized for his high, intense and non-conformist pressing. Thanks to his solid experience in clubs and selection, he is the ideal man to aspire to all titles. He has also lifted most of the trophies possible in the world of football.

Born in Heidelberg in 1965 (59 years old), Flick started on the benches in 1996, when he was player-coach at FC Victoria Bammental (1996-00). He then managed Hoffenheim for five seasons (2000-05). Subsequently, he was assistant to Giovanni Trapattoni and Lothar Matthäus at RB Salzburg, just before becoming Germany coach in August 2006.

Six years alongside Joachim Löw

After the 2006 World Cup, which was also played in Germany, Jürgen Klinsmann left the position of coach to Jürgen Löw and, consequently, Hansi Flick became his deputy. Löw and Flick had a string of successes with the ‘Mannschaft’ between 2008 and 2014 with a final of Euro 2008, a semi-final of the 2010 World Cup, a semi-final of Euro 2012 and a victory in the final of 2014 World Cup, in Brazil, against Argentina.

Sextuplet winner

After the 2014 World Cup, including a historic 7-1 victory against Brazil in the semi-final, Flick became the Sporting Director of the German Football Association (DFB) until 2017. He then became the club’s Sporting Director from Hoffenheim until February 2018.

In 2019, Bayern Munich hired Flick as assistant coach to Niko Kovac, like the coach’s brother, Robert Kovac. A few months later, the Bavarian club did without the services of the Croatian brothers, appointing Flick as coach. Bayern then won the historic sextuplet.

Flick took control of the team, then 4th, and after two victories, he was confirmed in his position by Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. He won 22 victories in his first 25 matches with Bayern and broke Guardiola’s record (21 out of 25).

Flick allows Bayern to inflict a tough defeat on Barça (2-8) and becomes the UEFA Best Coach of the Year.

Lewandowski, his lethal weapon

Once the Bundesliga in his pocket, he lifted the German Cup and Champions League trophies. The German Super Cup and the Club World Cup were also won. Like Barça in 2009, Bayern achieved the sextuplet with Neuer, Alaba, Kimmich, Müller and Lewandowski. The Polish striker scored more than one goal per match that year.

Flick continues the Bavarian adventure in 2020/21 and wins the Bundesliga again. This is his 7th title in a year and a half. He then told the club that he was joining the German team.

Despite 8 victories in 8 matches with the ‘Mannschaft’, things got complicated in Qatar, where the selection lost against Japan in the group stage of the World Cup. After the elimination, Flick remained in office but a poor series of results condemned him.
