UM6P/ 1st High Level Forum: Artificial Intelligence, a lever for development in Africa to develop a bottom-up vision for 2050

Placed under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the work of the three-day 1st High Level Forum on Artificial Intelligence opened yesterday Monday in Rabat, at the campus of the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University through its International Center for Artificial Intelligence of Morocco “AI Movement”, in partnership with UNESCO, under the theme “Artificial Intelligence as a lever for development in Africa”, with the participation of representatives from more than 30 countries, including around fifteen of African countries, with the aim of laying the foundations for an African strategy dedicated to AI. In this line, it was designated a UNESCO category II center in November 2023 and, therefore, recognized as a center of excellence in the field of AI and data sciences on the African continent.
The Forum program includes roundtables, workshops, networking sessions for start-ups and exhibitions with the objectives of discussing strategies and policies for AI in Africa, sharing advances in the field of AI on the Continent, discuss AI governance on key themes, launch capacity building initiatives for diverse groups and facilitate collaborations between African and global AI centers.
Just as well, several panels are on the program including “international conversations on AI”, “an AI strategy for Africa – What’s next?”, “African parliaments and AI governance” and “the role of the judiciary in AI governance”.
Still, the participants will debate the contributions and collaborations of African researchers to bring African languages into the era of AI, science and technology diplomacy, the ethics of AI in Africa, AI and promoting democracy for peace and development in Africa and the future of technology: Developing a bottom-up vision for 2050.
The work will also focus on the implications of AI in terms of cybersecurity, AI and the work of artists in Africa, African women and the development of cutting-edge AI solutions, the experiences of AI innovation in Europe and global AI partnerships.
Also featured in this Forum are inspiring TED-style talks, “success stories” from startuppers, and interactive sessions led by AI experts from Africa, America, Europe, China and the Middle East.
