Algeria: “Violent” riots after water shortage.

“Violent” riots broke out in a drought-stricken Algerian Saharan town late last week after months of water shortages, leading to taps drying up and forcing residents to queue to get water, according to the Associated Press.

In the town of Tiaret – which has fewer than 200,000 inhabitants and is located 250 kilometers southwest of Algiers – masked demonstrators set tires on fire and erected barricades to block roads in protest against rationing water, according to images and videos circulating on social media.

The unrest came after President Abdelmadjid Tebboune called for an end to the suffering, according to the Associated Press.
