While 250 million girls and boys are still excluded from the school system around the world, a UNESCO report analyzes for the first time the cost to the economy and the societal consequences of educational deficiencies.

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, calls on the Organization’s Member States to break as quickly as possible with “the vicious circle” of dropping out of school.

10,000 billion dollars per year: the global cost of dropping out of school and educational gaps is staggering. And to these financial considerations are added significant social damage. The message of this UNESCO report is clear: education is a strategic investment – one of the best investments for individuals, economies and society as a whole. This universal right must become a reality for every human being as quickly as possible.
