Australia today recognised the State of Palestine, marking a new diplomatic step within the international community’s efforts to achieve a two-state solution. The Australian government affirmed that “establishing diplomatic relations and opening embassies with Palestine is contingent upon the Palestinian Authority’s commitment to internal reforms.”
Australia also stressed that the international community is working on a comprehensive peace plan that includes the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, strengthening the capabilities of the Palestinian state, and ensuring Israel’s security. This announcement represents a noticeable shift in the stances of some Western countries towards the Palestinian cause and reflects growing support for the two-state solution as a strategic path to ending the decades-long conflict.
