The imprisoned Istanbul Mayor, Ekrem İmamoğlu, who has been imprisoned since March, has been summoned to appear before a judge on Sunday as part of a new investigation against him on charges of espionage, while around a thousand people demonstrated outside the court building in support of him, according to Agence France-Presse reporters.
The new investigation against İmamoğlu, the most prominent potential competitor to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, comes after a court in Istanbul acquitted him on Friday in a case related to allegations of manipulating a tender held in 2015 while he was serving as the mayor of Beylikdüzü, one of Istanbul's districts. İmamoğlu currently faces several lawsuits that prevent him from running for the upcoming presidential elections scheduled for 2028 for the "Republican People's Party," the largest opposition party in Turkey.
