In the latest developments regarding the case of the Egyptian media personality Maha Al-Saghir, the investigative authorities have referred her to the Economic Court after accusations of infringing intellectual property rights of global artistic works.
Al-Saghir is accused of stealing designs of paintings and attributing them to herself, which sparked widespread controversy in the artistic and media circles. The crisis began last July when Al-Saghir presented a set of paintings on television, claiming they were of her own personal creation. But quickly, international artists, including the Danish artist Lisa Nelson, the French artist City, and the German artist Caroline Wendelin, revealed that their works had been stolen and used without permission. The Supreme Council for Media Regulation's response was not delayed, as it issued a decision to ban Maha Al-Saghir from appearing in the media for six months, and issued a warning to the team of the program "Ma'akum Mona El-Shazly" for not verifying the accuracy of information before broadcasting the episode. The case was also referred to the Public Prosecution to follow up on the violations in accordance with the law on intellectual property rights. It is worth noting that Maha Al-Saghir is the ex-wife of the Egyptian star Ahmed El-Sakka, which increased media and public interest in the case and made it the talk of the artistic and media scene.
