THE “Green Hydrogen Morocco Camp: From Theory to Action” concluded on Saturday, July 6, 2024 with the announcement of the three finalist teams who will continue a mentoring program this summer. Accompanied by experts funded by the European Union through the MED-GEM Network program, German cooperation through GIZ Morocco and IRESEN – Institute for Research in Solar Energy and New Energies, these three teams were selected from 40 participants who attended the Summer School, themselves chosen from more than 300 applications received.

During this Green Hydrogen Camp, the first of its kind on the African continent, the participants were confronted with a major problem during the hackathon: “How to exploit Morocco’s renewable resources to create a sustainable, efficient and economically viable national vision of green ammonia?”. The deliverables requested by the organizers under the direction of Frank Woutersdirector of the MED-GEM networkincluded:

A high-level spatial master plan for green ammonia production and infrastructure. An assessment of possible applications of ammonia as a fuel. A techno-economic analysis for a Moroccan green ammonia economy in 2030, 2040 and 2050. A national research and development framework for green ammonia. Safety protocols and regulatory frameworks for ammonia production, storage and distribution. The teams’ solutions were evaluated according to several criteria, including: Innovation and creativity. Technical and economic feasibility. Scalability and potential for broad deployment. Economic, environmental and social impact. Clarity and relevance of the presentation.

The three finalist teams will benefit from intensive support throughout the summer to refine their projects, with mentoring sessions, coaching and detailed analyses. They will present their final prototypes at the 4th edition of the prestigious “World PtX Summit” taking place on October 8-9, 2024 in Marrakech.

HE Dr. Leila Benali, Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, during an exclusive address that she delivered via video duplex, invited the three finalist teams to a meeting to discuss their projects and their vision for the future of green hydrogen in Morocco.

In recognition of their efforts, the MED-GEM Network program offers the 8 candidates of the winning project a one-week study trip to the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) in Germany. FAU is renowned for its expertise in materials science and chemistry, offering an exceptional opportunity to network and collaborate with world-renowned researchers..
