HIBAPRESS – Rabat
The capital, Rabat, witnessed on Wednesday a national protest in which hundreds of male and female lawyers from various bodies of the Kingdom participated. The protest was called by the Federation of Young Lawyers Associations, in rejection of draft law No. 66.23 regulating the legal profession, which is currently in the legislative process in Parliament, and which the protesters considered a threat to the independence of the profession and guarantees of a fair trial.
The participants condemned the referral of the draft law to the General Secretariat of the Government without involving the professional institutions in its final form, considering this a violation of the participatory approach and a betrayal of the outcomes of the previous dialogue between the Ministry of Justice and the professional bodies. They also stressed that the project represents a legal setback that affects the essence of the defense profession and the balance of the justice system. The protesters raised slogans such as "Free Law", "No Justice Without Law", and "Independence is a Red Line", directing criticism at the Minister of Justice, Abdellatif Ouahbi, demanding a law that respects the universal principles of law and preserves its independence and immunity.
