The Moroccan Forum for Human Rights – Berrechid region criticized what it described as a disparity in the priorities of managing local affairs in the city, against the backdrop of talking about a project to modernize public lighting by adopting LED lamps, at a time when many streets in Berrechid are suffering from a clear deterioration in their infrastructure.
The forum explained, in a post published on its Facebook page, that the project to modernize public lighting may seem at first glance a positive step to improve the urban scene and rationalize energy consumption, but this trend raises, according to it, questions about its consistency with the real priorities of the city. The same source pointed out that a number of streets in Berrechid are witnessing the spread of deep potholes and the deterioration of roads and pavements, which constitutes a daily suffering for drivers and pedestrians alike, and causes repeated damage to cars and additional costs borne by citizens. In this context, the forum wondered whether priority should be given to modernizing public lighting, or to repairing roads and basic infrastructure that are suffering from wear and tear, considering that the real modernization of the city begins by improving the infrastructure and ensuring an urban space that respects the safety and dignity of the residents. The forum concluded its post by emphasizing that changing the lamps may represent a technical achievement, but it does not address, in its view, the fundamental problem represented by the condition of the roads, which it believes need to be repaired before thinking about beautifying them with modern lighting.
