Anti-terrorist searches took place this Thursday morning in a dozen cities in Belgium, resulting in the arrest of seven people. These operations were linked to the preparation of an attack during the Paris Olympic Games, which begin this Friday.
At the request of an investigating judge specialising in judicial terrorism, the Antwerp Federal Judicial Police carried out 14 searches in nine cities across Brussels, Wallonia and Flanders. The searches took place in Antwerp, Seraing, Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, Menen, Leopoldsburg, Liège, Kortrijk, Ghent and Zonhoven.
The aim of this large-scale operation was to arrest a group of people suspected of participating in the activities of a terrorist group, financing terrorism and preparing a terrorist attack, explained the federal prosecutor’s office.
The seven suspects arrested during these searches will be brought before an investigating judge who will decide whether to place them in pre-trial detention or place them under arrest warrant. The authorities specify that the specific objectives of these people have not yet been determined.
