All eyes are turning towards the works of the extraordinary conference scheduled for April 26, 2026, to elect a new leadership at the head of the General Union of Workers in Morocco, the trade union arm of the Istiqlal Party, where it seems that the expected successor's position is leaning towards the Secretary-General of the Free Education Federation, "Youssef Alaakouch," succeeding Naama Mayara.
This is what many male and female activists of the General Union of Workers in Morocco expressed through statements, posts, and photos of the expected leader on social media platforms. In the province of Settat, the regional office of the General Union of Workers in Morocco issued a statement "HIBAPRESS obtained a copy of it," through which it announced its absolute support for Youssef Alaakouch as Secretary-General of the General Union of Workers in Morocco during the upcoming extraordinary conference, describing this support as a firm certainty built over decades of joint struggle, tested positions, and defining moments that brought them together in the fields of real struggle, far from all the hopeless narratives that try to harm the man's reputation and attempts to settle open accounts, according to the statement. The regional office in Settat called on all its activists to correct the course and restore confidence within the General Union of Workers in Morocco, considering that the work of the extraordinary conference scheduled for April 26, 2026, is a historic opportunity to regain the initiative and redirect the Union's ship towards a shore of clarity, transparency, trust, dignity, seriousness, and active participation. The statement added that this position comes in the midst of the Union's organizational transformations, which require clarity and courage in taking positions; stressing that the Union of Settat province, with all its sectoral components, local structures, activists, workers, employees, and workers in various productive, service, and educational sectors, affirms its adoption of the wise and insightful vision aimed at correcting the organizational path, and values the decision to hold an extraordinary general conference to establish a culture of democratic rotation of leadership and limit centralized management practices in the direction of consolidating the participatory approach in management through the effective involvement of regional, provincial, and local bodies in the development, implementation, and follow-up of the Union's struggle policies, with full respect for the ethics charter of our venerable union.
