A number of speakers condemned, on Wednesday, before the Fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, the established complicity between the "Polisario" separatist movement and terrorist groups operating in the Sahel and Sahara region, warning of the growing dangers this situation poses to regional stability and security.
In his intervention before the committee, the President of the Coastal Institute for Research and Analysis for Conflict Transformation, Souleimane Satighy Sidibé, affirmed that the issue of links between "Polisario" militias and extremist currents is receiving increasing attention in the United States, reflecting a "qualitative shift" in how the international community views the "Polisario" militias, whose "terrorist deviations can no longer be covered up."
The speaker added that this reality has launched a "structured legislative process supported by both parties" within both chambers of the US Congress, where members from both Republicans and Democrats have introduced draft laws "to designate the Polisario as a terrorist organization."
The intervenor recalled that these steps were initiated by about twenty prominent members of the US House of Representatives and Senate, emphasizing that these measures at the US Congress level are based on "tangible evidence" proving the complicity of the Polisario militias and their involvement in terrorist and destabilizing regional acts.
In the same context, Mohammed Ziad Al-Jaabari, representing the Moroccan-Palestinian Friendship Association, pointed to several elements confirming the recruitment of Polisario members by terrorist organizations active in the Sahel region.
He specifically mentioned the activities of Adnan Abu Walid al-Sahrawi within groups loyal to "ISIS," in addition to reports indicating the involvement of separatist elements in recent attacks in the Middle East.
In this regard, the intervenor warned against the recruitment of youth and children in the Tindouf camps for extremist agendas.
For his part, Abdelbasset Batinaithar, representative of the "World Humanitarian Drive" organization, called on the international community to pay greater attention to the existing links between separatism, terrorism, and transnational crime in fragile areas.
Mr. Al-Jaabari also stressed the need to protect humanitarian areas from any militarization, exploitation, or extremist influence, and to ensure effective access of aid to the targeted populations.
For her part, Amal Jabour, speaking on behalf of the "Jordanian Philosophical Society," highlighted the growing concern regarding the links between the separatist movement and terrorist networks operating in the Sahel region, noting that these concerns have prompted some members of the US Congress to call for the designation of "Polisario" as a terrorist organization.
The Jordanian speaker considered, in this context, that the continuation of the current situation in the Tindouf camps, where the population detained for decades still suffers under the dictatorship of the Polisario, contributes to exacerbating security risks in the entire region.
Other interveners, such as Mahmoud Rahman Anwar from the "Africa International Culture" organization and Harald Trusch, warned of the blocked horizons for the youth of the Tindouf camps, the deteriorating humanitarian situation they endure, in addition to the continuous ideological mobilization they are subjected to by the "Polisario" militias, warning that this situation provides a breeding ground for extremism and recruitment by extremist groups.
