Olympic Committee shocks Algerian boxer Iman Khalif

The Paris 2024 Olympics are officially over and with all eyes on Los Angeles for the next Games in 2028, fans are already disappointed that a popular sport has been left out.

For the first time in more than a century, there will be no boxing competition at the 2028 Olympics, with the International Olympic Committee announcing that the sport favoured by many fans will not be included in that year’s games.

The decision follows a series of funding and governance issues between the IOC and the International Boxing Association (IBA).

As a result, Algerian boxer Iman Khalif will miss the competitions at the upcoming Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, despite her success in winning boxing gold at the Paris Olympics.

The IOC withdrew its recognition of AIBA as the world governing body in 2023, and for the 2024 Olympic Games, the IOC stripped AIBA of the organisation of the boxing tournament and opposed its decision to award prize money to the winners.

For boxing to reappear on the Olympic calendar, the International Olympic Committee explained that “Olympic boxing must be regulated by a reliable and well-managed international federation.”

However, a final decision will be made in 2025, meaning boxing could still be included if national federations resolve their issues with the IOC.

It is worth noting that boxing has been featured at almost every Summer Olympics since its first appearance in 1904.

The last time boxing was not included was in 1912, due to Swedish laws at the time prohibiting it.
