The national teams of Morocco and Egypt have booked their places in the quarter-finals of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, after qualifying at the top of their groups.
The Moroccan team was able to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Olympic Games thanks to a large victory over its Iraqi brother, 3-0, at the end of the second group competitions.
The “Atlas Lions” took the lead in the second group with 6 points, superior to the Argentine national team, which was equal in number of points, goal difference and goals scored, to also qualify as vice-champion of the group.
The Moroccan team, after occupying the first place in group 2, is waiting in the quarter-finals to meet the vice-champion of group 1.
The first group includes respectively France (6 points), the United States of America (3 points), New Zealand (3 points) and Guinea (0 points).
Morocco’s quarter-final opponent will be determined tonight, after the end of the matches between New Zealand v France and Paraguay v Mali.
On the other hand, the Egyptian national team qualified for the quarter-finals of the men’s football competitions at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games thanks to its exciting victory over its Spanish counterpart 2-1 (Tuesday) in the third (final) round of the third group.
Egypt topped the third group with 7 points, accompanying Spain to the quarter-finals, after the latter qualified in the previous round with 6 points.
According to the progress of the football competitions, the Egyptian team is waiting in the quarter-finals to face the vice-champion of group four, which includes the teams of Japan, Paraguay, Mali and Israel.
Japan secured their qualification for the quarter-finals after collecting 6 points from the first two rounds, but they did not secure the lead, followed by Paraguay with 3 points in second place, then Mali and Israel in third and fourth places with one point each.
Will the Moroccan and Egyptian national teams face each other at the 2024 Paris Olympics?
As per the tournament schedule, the winner of the match between the leader of Group Three (Egypt) and the runner-up of Group Four will meet the winner of the match between the leader of Group One and the runner-up of Group 2 (Argentina) in the semi-finals.
As for the winner of the match between the leader of Group 2 (Morocco) and the vice-champion of Group 1, it will play in the semi-final against the qualifier from the match between the leader of Group 4 and the vice-champion of Group Three (Spain).
The Egyptian national team will therefore only meet its Moroccan counterpart in the final on August 9, if both win the quarter-finals (August 2) and then overcome the obstacle of the semi-finals (August 5).
The two teams could also face off in the third-place match, if each advances to the semifinals and then loses, facing off for the Olympic bronze medal honor.
