HIBAPRESS – Berrechid
The city of Berrechid is witnessing a noticeable deterioration in a project dedicated to organizing street vendors and "Farrashat" owners, after its iron roofs began to fall consecutively. This situation has sparked discontent and questions about the fate of the project for which financial appropriations were allocated in the last two years.
Local sources revealed to HIBAPRESS that parts of the project have become in a dilapidated state, as the spaces that were supposed to contribute to limiting the exploitation of sidewalks and public property have turned into a facility witnessing falling roofs and deteriorating equipment, without any intervention for its rehabilitation.
The same sources added that the project is located on a number of sidewalks adjacent to Al-Massira market and behind the Jamal Eddine Khalifa Youth Center. The goal was to provide suitable spaces for street vendors and "Farrashat" owners, contributing to the organization of their activities and the clearing of streets and sidewalks.
The deterioration of this facility has surprised a number of residents and followers of local affairs, especially in light of the continued phenomenon of street vendors and the occupation of public property in several city streets, despite the projects implemented to address this situation.
Local activists are calling for the intervention of regional authorities and concerned parties to assess the project's condition, rehabilitate it, or find practical alternatives to organize street vendors and "Farrashat" owners within prepared spaces, instead of their continued spread on sidewalks and in streets.
This situation comes at a time when the Berrechid Communal Council had previously included in its decisions the issue of addressing the problem of street vendors and organizing them within model markets and the weekly market to clear and liberate public space. A question was also officially raised about the fate of the project to establish and rehabilitate spaces for street vendors in the city.
