Colombia officially opened its embassy in the occupied city of Jerusalem on Wednesday, becoming the tenth country to take this step, which contravenes international resolutions.
The opening ceremony was attended by Israeli Foreign Minister Gedeon Sa'ar, his Colombian counterpart Omar Bulla Escobar, and the mayor of West Jerusalem, Moshe Lion. Lion stated that Colombia has become the tenth country to move its embassy to Jerusalem. Israeli Foreign Minister Gedeon Sa'ar said, "This is an important day for the State of Israel, and an important day for the city of Jerusalem," as he signed the embassy's golden book in the presence of his Colombian counterpart Omar Bulla. Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella announced in July, following his election, his intention to open an embassy in Jerusalem, as he seeks to strengthen relations with Israel, which his leftist predecessor Gustavo Petro had severed in 2024 in the wake of the war in the Gaza Strip. In addition to Colombia, the United States, Guatemala, Honduras, Kosovo, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Fiji, Nauru, and the breakaway territory of Somaliland have moved their embassies to Israel to Jerusalem or opened embassies in the city.
