HIBAPRESS – Khalil Fezazi
The waste management crisis in the city of Laayoune is worsening, with a number of underground trash bins going out of service and being replaced by plastic ones. This situation brings back to the forefront the debate about the effectiveness of waste management and the extent to which valuable financial allocations are preserved for equipment.
The underground trash bins had represented a manifestation of modernizing the waste collection system in the city. However, their malfunction and outage have raised questions about the reasons for their discontinued use and the extent of maintenance and sustainability of this equipment.
This situation, according to circulating data, coincides with the departure of the "Ozone" company from the city, raising questions about the management of the subsequent phase and the continuity of cleaning services, especially in light of reports of increasing trash accumulation in some areas.
This situation also opens a discussion about the fate of the funds allocated by the Laayoune commune for the purchase and equipping of these bins, the actual benefit derived from them, and the responsibility for their maintenance and operational status to achieve the objectives for which they were created.
Given this situation, there is a need for clarifications from the concerned authorities regarding the reasons for the malfunction of the underground trash bins, the measures to address the registered shortcomings, and the plan adopted to improve waste collection services and maintain the cleanliness of the city.
