Guinea Conakry: Towards the limitation of presidential power to two terms

The draft of the new Constitution, with the major new feature of limiting presidential power to two terms in Guinea Conakry, was made public on Monday by the National Transitional Council.
Aiming to profoundly reform the Guinean political system, the bill proposes, as stipulated in Article 41, a bicameral republic with a National Assembly and a Senate which will be created as a new institution, reports the local press, noting a major innovation compared to the previous Constitution.
“The term of office of the President of the Republic is five years, renewable only once,” underlines article 44 of the Constitution, as quoted by the same source, specifying that this is a ban on any possibility of extending presidential power beyond two terms.
The new Constitution, which should put an end to the transition led by General Mamadi Doumbouya since the coup d’état of September 5, 2021, should be put to a vote before the end of the year, before the organization of presidential elections in this West African country.
