German national football team midfielder and captain Ilkay Gundogan announced his retirement from international football on Monday at the age of 33.
The name above explains his feeling of “certain fatigue”, according to what he wrote on his account on the platform “X” (formerly Twitter).
The Spanish Barcelona player added in his message: “I am very proud to have played 82 international matches with the national team of my country”, stressing that “the most outstanding moment” of his career was leading the national team in the 2024 European Cup, which took place this summer on German soil.
He continued: “After weeks of reflection, I have come to the conclusion that the time has come to end my career with the national team.”
Gundogan, the former Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City star, was part of coach Julian Nagelsmann’s side that were knocked out in the quarter-finals of the European Championship by the Spanish champions 1-2 after extra time.
