‘Sudden death’ kidnaps Uruguayan player after he falls on the pitch

Uruguayan football club Nacional Montevideo announced on Tuesday the death of its player Juan Izquierdo, aged 27, days after he collapsed during a Copa Libertadores match in Brazil.
The club said, citing doctors treating him at Albert Einstein Hospital in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo, that the cause of death was cardiac and respiratory arrest due to an irregular heartbeat.
The defender collapsed in the 84th minute of the second leg of the round of 16 against Sao Paulo last Thursday.
In a message posted on social media platform “X”, Club Nacional described Izquierdo’s death as a “terrible loss”.
