The education system in Morocco is divided into 4 stages:
Preschool which lasts 2 years (from 4 to 6 years old)
Primary school which lasts 6 years (from 7 to 13 years old)
The college which lasts 3 years (from 13 to 16 years old)
Secondary school which lasts 3 years (from 16 to 18 years old)
During the first two years of primary school, classes are taught in Arabic. Beyond these two years, science and mathematics are taught in Arabic.
Preschool
Preschools or nursery schools can be of 2 types:
Kindergartens: are private establishments located in town.
Koranic schools: are public establishments whose main mission is to fight against illiteracy.
It should be noted that 80% of children are enrolled in Koranic schools.
The Primary
Like preschool, establishments can be public or private.
Children attend school from Monday to Saturday with an average of around 30 hours of lessons per week.
Classes are taught in Arabic.
In order to validate their primary education and be admitted to secondary school, students must pass their “primary studies certificate”.
The college
The college is open to all students who have passed their primary exam. It takes place over a period of 3 years.
Just like primary education, parents will have the choice between private, fee-paying establishments and public, free establishments.
During the 3 years of middle school, students study scientific, literary and technical subjects. During the 3rd year, students fill out an orientation form to determine their choices for high school or even university. Depending on these choices, students will enter a general or technical high school.
At the end of the 3 years of middle school, students take an exam allowing them to enter high school.
Secondary: high school
High school is a continuation of middle school and prepares students for the baccalaureate which they will take at the end of their 3 years of study.
During these 3 years, students will study the subjects they chose in their 3rd year of middle school.
If they pass their baccalaureate, students will be able to continue their studies at university or in specialized schools.
