The American magazine Global Finance has ranked the governor of the Bank of Morocco, Abdellatif Jouahri, on the list of the best central bank governors in the world for the year 2024.
Mr. Al-Jawahiri, who received an “A” grade, is the only central banker from the Middle East and North Africa region to make it into the top ten of the ranking, titled “Central Bankers’ Report Card 2024.”
The report, published annually by Global Finance since 1994, ranks the central bank governors of more than 100 countries, territories and major regions, as well as the European Union, the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, the Bank of Central African States and the Central Bank of West African States.
Joseph Giarraputo, publisher and editor-in-chief of Global Finance, said in a statement that central banks “have waged a war on inflation in recent years, using the weapon of rising interest rates.”
He added that countries around the world are now seeing tangible results of these efforts, as inflation has fallen significantly.
Mr. Giarraputo noted that Global Finance’s annual reports on central banks celebrate bank governors “whose strategies have outperformed those of their peers through their uniqueness, creativity and perseverance.”
Global Finance’s ratings range from “A” to “F,” taking into account performance in controlling inflation, meeting economic growth targets, ensuring monetary stability, and managing interest rates. According to the magazine, an “A” rating signifies excellent performance, while an “F” rating represents a dismal failure.
In addition to Mr Al-Jawahiri, the list of central bank governors who received an “A” rating also included Roberto Campos Neto (Brazil), Rosana Costa (Chile), Harvish Kumar Segulam (Mauritius), Lesetia Kganyago (South Africa) and Nandalal (Sri Lanka) and Nguyen Thi Hung (Vietnam).
The full version of the report and the list of rankings will be published in the October issue of “Global Finance”, as well as the digital version on the website “www.gfmag.com”.
