Outgoing Senegalese President Macky Sall congratulated candidate Bassirou Diomaye Faye on Monday for his victory in the presidential election held on Sunday in the country.
“I welcome the smooth running of the presidential election on March 24, 2024 and congratulate the winner, Mr. Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who the trends show as the winner,” said Mr. Sall in a message published on his social networks. “It is the victory of Senegalese democracy,” he added.
Earlier in the day, the candidate of the ruling coalition, Amadou Ba, congratulated in a press release, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, “for his victory” in the presidential election “in the first round”.
The first trends of Sunday's presidential election give a large lead to Bassirou Diomaye Faye, candidate of the dissolved PASTEF party.
Almost all of the candidates in Sunday's presidential election also congratulated Bassirou Diomaye Faye of the “Diomaye President” coalition, which the first trends place largely in the lead at the end of the first round.
Bassirou Diomaye Faye, 44, was designated by Ousmane Sonko to be the candidate of the PASTEF party, after the latter was eliminated from the presidential race for defamation.
More than 7 million Senegalese registered on the electoral lists were called to the polls on Sunday to elect the successor of outgoing President Macky Sall, among the 17 candidates in the running.
The winner of this vote becomes the fifth president of Senegal since its independence in 1960. The country has been successively led by Léopold Sédar Senghor (1960-1980), Abdou Diouf (1980-2000), Abdoulaye Wade (2000-2012) and Macky Sall (2012-2024).
